Thanks to those who organised a highly enjoyable Ceilidh in The Counting House, Edinburgh on 9 September and a very successful Fashion Show at the Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools on 6 October – in total, over £6000 was raised for the Trust.
New Headteacher announced
We are pleased to announce the appointment of the first female headteacher at the school: this has been a long-term aim and will provide both strong leadership and an excellent role model for our students. The lady of the moment is Mrs Masamba, who comes with excellent qualifications and a wealth of experience. We hope that her appointment will be a significant milestone for the school in its quest to promote the education and empowerment of young women in Northern Malawi.
Examination Successes 2016
In the Malawi School Certificate examination in the summer of 2016, 30 girls passed (out of 32) – a pass rate of 94%. The national average pass rate was 58%.
Of that class, 11 girls have since been offered places at universities in Malawi.
Building Progress - Kitchen/Diner Complete
The new kitchen/diner is now open and operational; this will provide an invaluable large indoor space for use both by the school and the local community.
Donated money has now been released and work is underway to complete the science block, which will contribute hugely to the girls’ learning experience.
Thanks to a recent grant from the Solon Foundation, duplex housing has been constructed so more teachers can be accommodated on campus. This will help in the recruitment and retention of good quality staff.
